Translation of the Bible into Latin, established in the year 1965-1979 Pontifical Commission for the preparation of the publication of the New Vulgate.
The main task of the Commission was the edition of the translation made by St. Jerome in the 4th century, and bringing the Latin text into line with those found ancient manuscripts. In 1979, the complete edition of the translation in one volume has been approved and proclaimed standard ("editio typica") by Pope John Paul II.
The Latin text of the Bible is normative for the Catholic Church, and it guided all the translations into local languages.
