Of course, the Bible doesn’t say anything directly about abortion, since antiquity’s medicine was not aware of this operation. Nevertheless, the position of the Bible on this issue can be brought to light clearly enough.
Human embryo at every stage of development, even the earliest, is considered as a person with basic human manifestations in biblical texts. Embryo’s development occurs before God’s very eyes, and all the stages of this development are part of God's purpose for humanity. All days of human life are "written in the book" even before the germination of human embryo, that is God's purpose for human precedes its fetation. The words of Ps 139:14-17 is an obvious evidence of this; the words of God to the prophet Jeremiah about his vocation which was said even before God formed him in the womb (Jer 1:5) and analogically by meaning, apostle Paul’s words (Gal 1:15) are also evidence of this. The prophet Isaiah of Babylon says several times that God's purpose for human exists not only from the very moment of human’s formation in the mother’s womb – but also, God participates in human life, helping and protecting it, from the very moment of fetation.
The Law of Moses foresees accountability for actions which can result to the death of the fetus in the womb; it differs from responsibility for willful killing but the thing is that the law considers only the case of unintentional actions.
Speeches about the Lord Jesus Christ’s birth take a special place among the texts which express a biblical attitude toward the embryo. The fact that in the Incarnation the Son of God accepts the whole human nature, not excluding the period of fetal development is the key fact here. This is evidenced by Isaiah of Babylon prophecy about the birth of Christ (Is 49:1). The evangelist Matthew expresses himself very clearly (Mt 1 :20): according to him the fetus in the womb of the Virgin Mary is already the Christ – the Son of God and Son of Man. Finally, the evangelist Luke testifies (Luke 1: 41) that John the Baptist fulfills his prophetic ministry being again in his mother’s womb and in this sense he is a man in full sense of the word.
Thus, the human embryo, despite the incompleteness of his biological development, is a human being for the Bible. It clearly implies from here that the intentional killing of the fetus is a murder, such as the murder of an adult, aggravated by the defencelessness of the fetus. Every murder is unambiguously prohibited by the Holy Bible.
14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. |
15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. |
16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. |
17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! |
5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. |
15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, |
1 Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. |
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. |
41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: |
